History of low-cost airline «Volaris»

Volaris is a Mexican low cost airline based in Santa Fe, Alvaro Obregon, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana. It is the second largest airline in the country after Aeroméxico, which handles domestic and international flights. Volaris ranks first in domestic air travel in Mexico with a market share of 28%.

The formation of the airline (the creation of legal entities and the necessary infrastructure) began in August 2005. The airline was originally called Vuela Airlines. The main original shareholders of the company were Grupo Televisa (the world’s largest Spanish-language media conglomerate), Inbursa (an insurance company owned by multi-billionaire Carlos Slim), Taca Airlines and Discovery Americas. Each of the partners invested 25% or 100 million US dollars. In July 2010, it was announced that Televisa and Inbursa had sold their stake in Volaris, and the airline was owned by TACA Airlines (50%), investment fund Discovery Americas (25%) and Indigo Partners.

The sale of tickets by the airline began on January 12, 2006. The first flight of the airline on the route Toluca — Tijuana successfully took place on March 13, 2006.

On June 5, 2012, the airline launched a frequent flyer program called VClub. This is a program for regular members that provides special rates, offers, hot tours and other benefits. Airline customers can save up to 40% using a VClub membership.

On September 17, 2012, Volaris announced the start of a codeshare partnership with the German airline Condor. Condor Airlines passengers were able to fly on more routes.

On March 13, 2013, the airline celebrated its seventh anniversary by offering passengers a 70% discount on all flights. Subsequently, such discounts on the airline’s birthday have become a good tradition. Volaris announced the creation of the Volaris Costa Rica subsidiary in March 2016. The subsidiary airline began operating in November 2016, with San Jose as its base airport.

The airline is currently headquartered in Santa Fe, Alvaro Obregon and Mexico City.

The airline has received various awards. Among other things, she was awarded as the most punctual airline both in Mexico and in the world. The airline also received the ESR (Social Corporate Responsibility) award. In 2020, Volaris became the first Mexican airline to receive a certificate of excellence for its high level of tourism safety, thanks to the rapid and efficient implementation of COVID-19 safety protocols during flights.

Volaris is one of the few airlines that expects to generate an operating profit in 2021 during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such a rapid recovery in profits is due to the policy of the airline, which was able to quickly reorient itself in a changing environment.
