Low-cost airline «Sunwing Airlines»

Sunwing Airlines Inc. is an airline headquartered in Etobicoke, Toronto that offers scheduled and charter services to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States. A Sunwing Airlines office is also located in Montreal, in Ville Saint-Laurent, very close to Montreal-Trudeau airport. This airline is a subsidiary of Sunwing Travel Group and its sister company is Sunwing Vacations.Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International Airport in Montreal and Pearson International Airport in Toronto are the company’s main bases of operation. Sunwing is also present at Vancouver International Airport, Calgary International Airport and Jean-Lesage International Airport in Quebec. The company also offers departures to sun destinations from regional airports in Quebec and Ontario. About thirty Canadian destinations have access to Sunwing services during the winter period.

Sunwing Airlines was born from the desire of travel wholesaler Sunwing Vacations to create its own airline to transport its travelers. Former Canada 3000 executives founded the company in November 2005. Since then, Sunwing Airlines has operated a fleet of next-generation Boeing 737-800s, all equipped with 189 leather seats.

The Canadian airline’s main travel wholesaler is Sunwing Vacations. In 2009, its parent company, Sunwing Travel Group, created a strategic venture with the TUI Group. Thus, a second major wholesaler was added to the carrier, Signature Vacations.

During the winter of 2013-2014, Sunwing Airlines operated a fleet of 32 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

On December 30, 2021, during a Sunwing charter flight to Cancun, a group of Quebec influencers organized a party on board this flight of the Canadian company. Several videos of the incident have been revealed where we can see a hundred young adults smoking electronic cigarettes while the plane is in flight, we also see other passengers drinking alcohol they have illegally brought on board the aircraft, we can see the hundred passengers dancing without a mask and without any respect for the health rules in force at the time of the event when the Covid-19 pandemic was hitting the world population very hard. The situation was so out of control that the flight attendants had to take refuge in the back of the aircraft. When the event was made public, the tour operator decided to cancel the party group’s return flight. Air Canada as well as Air Transat did the same and they too refused to bring them back on board their aircraft.

In March 2022, WestJet Airlines announced the acquisition of Sunwing.
