Rules of transporting children on Discover Airlines flights
Discover Airlines, committed to providing a seamless and comfortable travel experience for families, has established specific baggage regulations and services for children traveling on its flights.
Baggage Regulations for Children:
Infants (0‒2 years of age):
- Irrespective of the booked fare (except Economy Light), route, or Miles & More status, infants are entitled to one piece of checked baggage weighing up to 23 kilograms (approximately 50.7 pounds) with a maximum size per item of 158 centimeters (approximately 62.2 inches).
Children Aged Two and Over:
- Children aged two and over have the same free baggage allowance as adults, which corresponds to the fare class booked.
Carry-On Items for Children:
- In addition to their baggage allowance, passengers traveling with children are allowed to bring their booster seat, child seat, cot, or foldable stroller on board as additional carry-on baggage, free of charge. Foldable strollers can be handed over when boarding and will be returned to passengers after landing.
Baby On Board:
- For infants weighing up to 11 kilograms and with a maximum height of 67 centimeters, Discover Airlines offers baby bassinets free of charge on all long-haul flights. Seat reservation fees for seats with bassinets may apply, depending on the booking class. Bassinet availability is limited, and passengers can reserve one up to 52 hours before departure through the airline’s service center. Discover Airlines provides water suitable for baby bottles and offers baby food on board. Passengers are encouraged to bring their baby’s preferred food or bottle, as the availability of baby food on flights may be limited. The airline also assists with warming baby bottles and food on board, and changing tables are available in the washrooms, with spare diapers provided for emergencies.
Children Traveling Alone:
- Discover Airlines prioritizes the safety and well-being of unaccompanied minors (UM). This service is mandatory for children aged 5 to 11 and optional for those aged 12 and above. Children aged 5 to 11 can travel with a companion from their own family, such as a sibling, who must be at least 16 years old. The UM service can be booked for all point-to-point connections, with a fee of EUR 75 / GBP 64 / CHF 82 / US$ 89 / CZK 1,914 / SEK 759 / NOK 763 / DKK 558 / PLN 338 / HUF 26,396 per route and per unaccompanied child. Care services for children traveling alone must be booked through Discover Airlines’ Service Center or at an airport counter.
Child Seats:
- Passengers can bring their child seats on board, provided that the child restraint system is accepted by Discover Airlines. There is no additional charge for using a child seat on board. However, parents must purchase a CHILD ticket for babies under two years of age to attach the child seat to a passenger seat. Child restraint systems must not impede other passengers during possible emergency evacuations. Specific rules apply to boarding and seat selection, including avoiding seats in emergency exit rows.
Expectant Mothers:
- Expectant mothers with uncomplicated pregnancies can fly with Discover Airlines without a certificate from their gynecologist up to the end of their 36th week of pregnancy or up to four weeks before their expected due date. Starting from the 28th week of pregnancy, carrying an up-to-date medical certificate is recommended. This certificate should confirm that the pregnancy is proceeding without complications, provide the expected due date, and clearly state that flying is not contraindicated. In cases of uncomplicated twin or multiple pregnancies, flying is possible until the end of the 32nd week. To reduce the risk of thrombosis during pregnancy, expectant mothers are advised to wear support stockings. Different regulations may apply in certain countries, and Discover Airlines recommends checking local regulations in advance.
Children’s Menu:
- On all long-haul flights, Discover Airlines offers special meals designed for younger passengers. These child meals should be pre-ordered through the Discover Airlines Service Center to ensure availability during the flight.
Rules for transporting pets on Discover Airlines flights
Discover Airlines recognizes the importance of keeping furry family members close, and as such, it allows the transport of dogs and cats in the cabin, subject to specific conditions. Notably, animals are not transported in the cargo hold.
Pet-in-Cabin Service:
- To ensure that you can travel with your beloved pets, Discover Airlines offers a Pet-in-Cabin service. This service must be booked in advance through the Discover Airlines Service Center at +49 (0) 30 915 88 620. Please note that there is a charge associated with this service.
- Passengers are required to complete the «Form for Transportation of an Animal in the Passenger Cabin» and bring it to the check-in counter at the start of their journey.
Requirements for Pet Carriage:
- Several essential requirements must be met for the safe and comfortable transport of pets:
- Advance reservation and confirmation of carriage are mandatory.
- Only cats and dogs are eligible for in-cabin transport.
- Pets must be at least 12 weeks old; however, for travel to/from Germany, this age requirement increases to 15 weeks, and for travel to/from the USA, it is 16 weeks.
- The combined weight of the pet and its carrying container must not exceed 8 kilograms.
- Carrying containers must meet specific dimensions, either measuring a maximum of 55 x 40 x 23 centimeters (height x width x depth) or 118 centimeters (height + width + depth). The container must also be of soft material.
- No more than two animals can be transported in a single carrier.
Requirements for Assistance Dogs in the Cabin:
- Travelers with assistance dogs must adhere to specific guidelines to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers on board:
- Assistance dogs must be trained to obey their handler’s commands and exhibit appropriate behavior in public spaces. This includes refraining from barking, growling, or jumping at people or other animals.
- Dogs must not relieve themselves in the cabin or at the boarding gate, except in a manner that poses no health risk or hygiene issues.
- If an assistance dog does not exhibit appropriate behavior, Discover Airlines reserves the right to refuse transportation. Passengers are responsible for any resulting damages and additional costs associated with the dog’s transport.
Onboard Requirements:
- Assistance dogs must be able to fit within the foot space of the passenger’s seat and must be securely attached to the seat belt using a pet harness provided by Discover Airlines. The dog is not permitted to occupy a passenger seat.
- For safety reasons, it is recommended to secure the dog with a harness rather than a collar.
- Passengers are required to bring a muzzle for their dog. In situations where a dog may pose a threat to the safety of other passengers, the passenger will be instructed to muzzle their dog. Failure to comply may result in the dog being denied travel on Discover Airlines flights. While it is not mandatory for travel to/from the US and Canada, passengers are strongly encouraged to bring a muzzle as a precaution and as a courtesy to fellow travelers.
History of Discover Airlines
Discover Airlines, officially known as EW Discover GmbH, is a German airline headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. It operates as a leisure-focused carrier, offering services to various destinations around the Mediterranean, North America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Owned by the Lufthansa Group, Discover Airlines primarily operates from its two main bases at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport. The airline underwent a rebranding in September 2023, transitioning from its former identity as Eurowings Discover.
Foundation and Early Operations (2021-2022)
Discover Airlines commenced its operations on the 24th of July 2021 under the name Eurowings Discover. It inaugurated flights from Frankfurt to Mombasa and Zanzibar, utilizing Airbus A330 aircraft, after successfully obtaining its air operator’s certificate. This marked the beginning of its journey in the competitive leisure travel market. Notably, Discover Airlines positioned itself as a significant competitor to the established German leisure carrier, Condor, which served several of the same routes that Discover Airlines planned to operate.
In its initial year of operations, Discover Airlines rapidly expanded its network by introducing flights to various sought-after destinations. These included Punta Cana, Windhoek, and Victoria Falls. The airline’s commitment to growth continued as it added additional routes in 2021, such as Las Vegas, Mauritius, Bridgetown, Montego Bay, Varadero, the Canary Islands, Egypt, and Morocco. At this point, the carrier had ambitious plans to expand its fleet, aiming for a total of 10 A320s and 11 A330s by mid-2022.
Strategic Shift and Expansion (2021-2022)
In September 2021, Lufthansa Group made a strategic decision to shift responsibility for several mid-haul leisure routes to Eurowings Discover. This move included stationing three Airbus A320-200s in Frankfurt, primarily serving destinations in the Canary Islands starting in late 2021. This adjustment marked the airline’s growing role within the Lufthansa Group’s overall strategy.
By the summer of 2022, Discover Airlines further solidified its position in the leisure travel market by establishing a second operational base at Munich Airport. This base was primarily focused on short-haul operations, particularly those surrounding Mediterranean destinations. The move to Munich expanded the airline’s operational flexibility and allowed for more diverse route offerings.
Expansion and Focus on Frankfurt (2022-2023)
In September 2022, Lufthansa made another significant decision, transferring some of its own routes to Canada to Discover Airlines for the upcoming winter season. This shift in responsibility showcased the growing importance of Discover Airlines within the group. Simultaneously, Discover Airlines announced its intention to concentrate its long-haul operations at Frankfurt Airport, leading to the termination of its North American and Caribbean services from Munich Airport. This move was partly driven by staff shortages and allowed the airline to better manage its resources.
To eliminate any confusion with Lufthansa’s existing subsidiary, Eurowings, Discover Airlines underwent a rebranding in September 2023. The revamped airline introduced a fresh corporate identity, including a distinctive aircraft color scheme. Featuring a prominent «Discover» lettering and a color palette inspired by the sky, horizon, sea, sun, and beach, the new design aimed to evoke the spirit of travel and holidays.
Recent Developments and Future Plans
In just two years of operation, Discover Airlines has made significant strides. It has expanded its fleet by 22 aircraft and grown its route network to encompass 60 destinations. Looking ahead, the airline has ambitious plans to add six more aircraft to its fleet in the coming year, with deployments in both Frankfurt and Munich. This expansion will result in Discover Airlines serving a total of 73 destinations from its two German base airports, further solidifying its position as a key player in the leisure travel sector.
