Arajet: History
It began flying to Costa Rica, Colombia, El Salvador, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands in July 2022.
Dominican Wings received its operating certificate from the Dominican Civil Aviation Authority in late 2014 and planned charter flights from the Dominican Republic to Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina for and on behalf of tour operators. The first Airbus A320-200 aircraft was delivered on May 3, 2015.
On June 28, 2017, Avion Express announced the sale of a 65% stake in Dominican Wings to Mr. Victor Pacheco, president of the company, who gained full control of the airline.
In early 2018, it was announced that the airline had switched from charter flights to scheduled super-lowcosters. The airline said it had invested $60 million in its relaunch as an ultra-low-cost carrier.
The airline announced in September 2021 that it would be renamed Arajet and operate as a budget carrier offering flights to the Caribbean and the Americas.
The Junta de Aviación Civil (JAC) has approved a request to amend AraJet’s Certificate of Economic Authorization (CAE) No. 25 to include 30 new routes, and authorizes the use of scheduled and non-scheduled air services for passengers and cargo, in international operations, from the Dominican Republic to the United States, Cuba, Colombia, United Mexican States, Costa Rica, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Panama, Aruba, French Republic, Guatemala, Republic of Peru, Haiti, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago in November 2021 during its plenary session.
The Instituto Dominicano de Aviacion Civil (IDAC), in collaboration with Dominican carrier Arajet, secured the certification of two Dominican inspectors at Boeing facilities in December 2021 to inspect Boeing-type aircraft. Pico Duarte was the company’s first aircraft, the Boeing 737 MAX 8, named for the highest mountain elevation in the Caribbean and a nature preserve in the Dominican Republic, completed the painting process in February 2022. Registered HI-1026 arrived at Las Americas International Airport on March 3, 2022.
On March 14, 2022, Arajet was officially launched with Dominican President Luis Abinader announcing that the country was creating a Dominican representative airline with majority Dominican capital. At the same time, Boeing announced the airline’s order for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 200s (with the possibility of 15 more in the future), becoming the first Caribbean operator of this type.
During the ceremony it was announced that Arajet S.A. is financed by one of the world’s largest private alternative investment firms with multiple assets, Bain Capital, and Griffin Global Asset Management, a commercial aircraft leasing and alternative asset management company.
