Allegiant Air: History

Allegiant Air is an American low-cost airline based in Las Vegas and based at McCarran International Airport.Allegiant Air was founded in 1997 and began operations in 1999 from Fresno, California, using used Douglas DC-9s.

After Allegiant Air filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 13, 2000, the company was restructured by new CEO Maurice J. Gallagher. Since then it has had its home base in Las Vegas. Gallagher concentrated on routes that were not served by the other major American airlines, or only served with small aircraft. The DC-9 fleet was replaced by used McDonnell Douglas MD-80s and has been growing ever since.

At the beginning of March 2010, Allegiant Air announced that it would take over six Boeing 757-200s from the European airline Thomson Airways by 2012, which will primarily be used on new routes to Hawaii. For this, the aircraft require ETOPS approval.

When an Allegiant Air MD-83 evacuated passengers via the evacuation slide on September 16, 2013, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) determined that the airline may be under-maintaining these evacuation slides. As a result, almost the entire MD-80 fleet was shut down for a short time.

In October 2017, flights to Hawaii were suspended and the Boeing 757-200 fleet was subsequently retired.

On November 28, 2018, the last flights were operated with aircraft from the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series. Since then, only aircraft from the Airbus A320 family have been used.

On August 5, 2019, Allegiant Air acquired the naming rights to the Raiders’ new stadium under construction in Las Vegas. Since then, the structure previously known as Las Vegas Stadium has been named Allegiant Stadium. Two years later, a plane was also given a special Las Vegas Raiders livery.

On January 5, 2022, Boeing and Allegiant Air announced an order for 50 737 MAX jets, with options for 50 more aircraft. The deal involves the 737-7 and 737-8-200 types of the 737 MAX family.
