Air Canada Rouge: History

Air Canada Rouge is a low cost Canadian airline. It is a subsidiary of Air Canada. Based at Toronto Airport and Montreal Airport. In early October 2012, it became known about Air Canada’s plans to create a new low-cost airline that will actively interact with the travel division of Air Canada Vacations.

In December 2012, Air Canada introduced its subsidiary Air Canada Rouge. The first flights were scheduled for July 2013. The focus is on tourism destinations and competition with Transat, Sunwing and WestJet Airlines. It was originally planned that Air Canada Rouge would fly to Europe and Central America, including the Caribbean.

However, in 2014, the airline began to operate more flights within the country. This was one of the cost-cutting moves by the Air Canada group.

In 2019, Air Canada Rouge begins to replace Air Canada Express on routes in Eastern Canada.

In March 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Air Canada suspended most of its flights and laid off more than 5,000 employees, including all Air Canada Rouge flight attendants.

In contrast to the parent company, Rouge focuses on the holiday business and therefore only serves many destinations seasonally. Passengers are also offered fewer comfort features compared to Air Canada. The seat spacing on board is smaller and in-flight entertainment is only possible via WLAN on devices you have brought with you or rented. A business class is not offered, only a premium economy class (called Premium Rouge). While meals are generally included in the fare on long-haul routes, alcoholic beverages are only offered at extra cost in Economy Class.
